The Temple's Purpose

Constructed in 500-900 AD and located on the architectural site of Tiwanaku in Western Bolivia, the Akapana Pyramid is a majestic man-made seven-tiered hill that served religious, cultural, and symbolic purposes for the pre-Incan Tiwanaku civilizations.

The Akapana Pyramid was created as a cosmic worship temple and was specifically constructed to control the sacred natural flow of rainwater.

Survival

The stone heads are representative of the civilization’s victory against their fallen enemies. The heads being incorporated into the structure itself invoke a feeling of protection from other civilizations and are assumed to have been an important part of Tiwanaku culture, seeing as they carved them into their place of worship.

Cosmic Worship

The pyramid holds extensive knowledge and discipline regarding cosmology and earth cycles, as well as architectural needs that coincide with their religious beliefs and practices.

Water Systems

The pyramid incorporated a unique underground water system that allowed water to flow through the structure. Water from a basin located at the summit of the pyramid is channeled through the outlet of the main canal in the system that directs the flow towards the north and alluvial plain of the Rio Guaquira-Tiwanaku.
